Yacht companies face many obstacles in expanding their business in China, including marina water depth, infrastructure, sales tax around 40% — and finding workers who can operate the crafts.

A boat that is longer than 55 feet requires a captain, and boats longer than 100 feet need crews.

As an evolving cosmopolitan capital, Shanghai’s skyscraping hotels and fine dining restaurants scream luxury—and so does the Chinese city’s latest trend: yachting. The port city has seen growth in the recreational boating industry along the Huangpu River as new marinas and waterfront developments are popping up to support the seafaring leisure sport. My Comment: China has a long naval tradition, and with greater wealth I would not be surprised to see impressive yachts and boats become a requirement for China's elite.

China Super Rich Set To Propel Luxury Yacht Sales -- USA Today/AP

HONG KONG — With their sleek, modern lines and polished finish, the two yachts built by Samuel Wong's shipyard fit right in among the multimillion-dollar floating palaces moored at a tony Hong Kong yacht club.

Onboard, a disco ball, karaoke system and garish neon blue accent lighting in the living quarters are hints that the vessel is aimed at the luxury yacht industry's newest growth market: wealthy Chinese.
